Electric cars and buses in Maharashtra will no longer have to pay toll on three major routes namely, the Atal Setu in Mumbai, the Mumbai-Pune Expressway, and the Samruddhi Mahamarg. The move came into effect from Friday, comes under the Maharashtra Electric Vehicle (EV) Policy and is part of the state’s commitment sustainable transport.

The exemption applies to both private and government-owned electric four-wheelers and passenger buses. Eligible vehicles include private e-cars, state transport buses, and city public transport e-buses. However, electric goods carriers are not covered under this waiver.

Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik said the government is also considering extending toll-free travel for electric cars and buses across all highways in Maharashtra.

There had been a lot of confusion around the toll exemption for electric vehicles. The EV policy was announced on May 23, 2025 but the toll operators continued to charge toll and refused to acknowledge the exemption, saying they had no such information from the government. There was a lot of news coverage and social media posts about the lack of communication about toll exemption to EVs to toll plazas. Finally, on Friday the government clarified the policy and EV owners were pleasantly surprised to see ‘0’ deduction on toll plazas.

Officials added that the state is working to strengthen charging infrastructure to make EV adoption easier. Plans include setting up multiple fast-charging points on expressways and highways and tying up with petrol pumps to install charging stations at fuel outlets, ST depots, and stands. This, they say, will help remove the “range anxiety” that many EV owners face.

The EV policy also sets ambitious targets for the coming years: 30% of all new vehicle registrations to be electric, 40% for two and three-wheelers, 30% for cars and SUVs, 50% for aggregator cabs, and 15% for private buses. By 2030, the state aims to cut 325 tons of PM 2.5 emissions and reduce one million tons of greenhouse gases from the transport sector.
