In view of the ongoing heavy rainfall and the red alert issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), authorities have declared a holiday for all schools and colleges in Thane, Navi Mumbai and Panvel on Wednesday, August 20.

The decision has been taken by the Thane Zilla Parishad’s education department, Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC), and Panvel Municipal Corporation to ensure the safety of students.

As per the circulars, all anganwadis, government and private schools, Zilla Parishad schools, municipal schools, aided and unaided schools, ashram schools, junior colleges, senior colleges, and training institutes will remain closed for the day.

Officials said the heavy rainfall has caused travel difficulties for students, and with more rain expected, a precautionary closure was necessary. Parents and students have been advised to take note of the holiday announcement and avoid unnecessary travel.

The decision follows IMD’s red alert warning for parts of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, including Thane district.
